George Rogers Clark founded the city of Louisville in 1778 and named it after the French king Louis XVI. Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky and county seat of the Jefferson County. It is the home to Kentucky Derby; the most famous and widely watched race of Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. It is situated in north central Kentucky on Indiana Kentucky border between the Ohio River and Falls of Ohio. As it includes southern Indiana counties its metropolitan area is also referred as Ketuckiana.
The city is located in the Blue grass region and its location on Ohio River influences its development hence spurring it as a major shipping port. Mostly the city is situated on flat and wide flood plains which are surrounded by hills on all sides. The climate of Louisville is humid subtropical with four seasons i.e. Spring in March, Summer in May to September, Fall in October- November and Winter in December- February. Severe Weather conditions are very common in the city. The region may also face occasional tornados. Winter is a mix of icing, sleet, rain, snow and sometimes heavy snowfall.
The city is a blend of new and old architecture. The largest historic conservation district is Old Louisville neighborhood which features Victorian building and homes in the US. It is also the 3rd largest district overall. Many modern skyscrapers and older preserved buildings are found downtown. The city of Louisville has lately emerged as a main center for the medical sciences and health care industries. A few of the initial artificial heart transplants were done in Louisville.
The (TARC) Transit Authority of River City runs the public transportation which mainly consists of buses. These buses provide service to all the parts of Jefferson County, downtown Louisville and Kentucky suburbs in Bullitt County and Oldham County and Indiana suburbs of New Albany, Clarksville and Jeffersonville.
